The handiest robot-vacuum feature is becoming affordable. The dock that empties the robot on its own, once reserved for top models, now appears on mid-range machines, helped by ever-fiercer competition between brands.
It's a change that matters, because self-emptying is exactly what turns a robot from gadget into an appliance you forget you own: weeks without touching it.
Be careful what you pick, though. The most complete docks also wash and dry the mop pad, but they take up space and replacement bags are a recurring cost. The cheapest models in the category sometimes cut back on navigation, and a robot that gets lost around the house defeats the convenience.
