⚖ Verdict

The Ninja Foodi MAX DualZone AF400EU is one of the most versatile air fryers on the market, perfect for those who want to cook two different dishes at the same time without compromising quality. It’s ideal for families of 3-4 who value flexibility and advanced features, but it’s not suitable for those with limited kitchen space or who cook only small portions. The price is justified by the dual-zone feature and capacity, but energy consumption and noise are factors to consider.

The testing notebook

The question everyone’s asking: Can it really cook two different dishes at once?

Yes, but with a few caveats. The Ninja Foodi MAX DualZone AF400EU has two independent 4.75-litre baskets, each with its own timer and temperature controls. This means you can fry chips in one zone and cook chicken in the other without mixing flavours. However, don’t expect the same precision as two separate appliances: if you set very different temperatures (e.g., 180°C and 100°C), the results might not be perfect in both zones.

The real advantage is flexibility. You can cook a full meal in one go or prepare two portions of the same dish in half the time. For example, we cooked 800g of frozen chips in 15 minutes by splitting the load between the two baskets. The result? Even crispiness and halved cooking times compared to a single-basket fryer.

How much space does it take up, and how much food can it hold?

At 39 x 32 x 32 cm, the AF400EU isn’t exactly compact. If you have a small kitchen, you’ll need to plan where to place it—it requires at least 10 cm of clearance around it for ventilation. That said, the claimed 9.5-litre capacity (4.75 litres per basket) is accurate and enough for a family of four.

In practice, one basket can comfortably hold 600g of frozen chips or four chicken thighs. If you’re cooking two different dishes, you’ll need to split the space: for example, 300g of vegetables in one basket and four burgers in the other. It’s not small, but if you’re used to larger fryers (like the Ninja MAX PRO with 7.6 litres), you might find it limiting.

One detail we appreciate: the baskets are one-handed removable, thanks to a quick-release system. This makes it easier to check cooking progress without turning off the appliance or using oven gloves.

Is it easy to use, or do you need the manual?

The AF400EU has a digital touch panel with intuitive icons and an LED display showing time and temperature for each zone. The preset functions (chips, chicken, vegetables, etc.) are handy if you don’t want to adjust settings manually. However, the manual isn’t redundant—some features, like Sync Finish (which syncs the end of cooking in both zones), aren’t immediately obvious.

Programming is straightforward: select the temperature (from 40°C to 240°C) and time (up to 60 minutes), then press start. A beep alerts you when cooking is done, but it’s not too loud. A minor downside? The touch buttons are sensitive, and accidental touches can change settings.

How much energy does it use, and how noisy is it?

The maximum power is 2400 watts, but actual consumption depends on what you’re cooking and at what temperature. During our tests, we measured an average draw of 1200-1500 watts for cooking at 180-200°C. It’s not low, but it’s in line with other high-end air fryers. If you use it for 30 minutes a day, your electricity bill will increase by about €5-7 per month (based on a cost of €0.30/kWh).

As for noise, the fan emits a constant hum around 60-65 dB, similar to a medium-power vacuum cleaner. It’s not annoying, but if your kitchen is near the living room, it might be noticeable during conversations or while watching TV. The noise increases slightly when the heating element kicks in to maintain temperature.

Is it easy to clean, or a nightmare?

The good news is that the baskets and grease-collecting tray are dishwasher-safe. This makes cleaning much easier, especially after cooking greasy foods like chicken wings or chips. The non-stick coating on the baskets works well: even without oil, food residue comes off with a soft sponge and some detergent.

The main issue is the inside of the fryer, which isn’t removable. After a few uses, you’ll notice grease buildup on the walls and heating element. To clean it, you’ll need a damp cloth and mild detergent, being careful not to wet the electrical components. It’s not complicated, but it takes a bit of patience.

Quick answers

Can I use it for frozen and fresh foods together?

Yes, but with some adjustments. Frozen foods generally require higher temperatures and longer cooking times than fresh foods. If cooking both at once, use the Sync Finish function to align the end times, or manually adjust the settings.

Is it suitable for someone living alone?

It depends. If you often cook small portions, a more compact fryer (like the Ninja CRISPi FN101EUGY) might be better. The AF400EU is designed for families or those who want to cook multiple dishes at once.

Can I bake cakes or desserts?

Yes, but with limitations. The basket shape isn’t ideal for tall cakes, but you can make muffins, cookies, or brownies. Use silicone moulds compatible with the AF400EU and reduce the temperature by 10-15°C compared to your recipe.

How long is the warranty?

The standard warranty is 2 years, but you can extend it to 5 years by registering the product on Ninja’s website. Always check the terms at purchase, as they may vary.

To buy or not to buy? The verdict

The Ninja Foodi MAX DualZone AF400EU is one of the most versatile air fryers on the market, especially if you cook for 3-4 people and want to save time. The dual-zone feature works well in most cases, and the capacity is enough to prepare a full meal. However, it’s not perfect: it takes up space, consumes energy, and requires some practice to get the most out of its functions.

Score: 8.5/10 – A great product, but not for everyone. If you have a small kitchen or cook only for yourself, consider more compact alternatives. If you want flexibility and don’t mind the initial cost, the AF400EU is a purchase that pays off over time.

Who we recommend it for:

  • Families of 3-4 who want to cook multiple dishes at once.
  • Those looking for an advanced air fryer with good capacity.
  • Buyers willing to invest in a durable, versatile appliance.

Who we don’t recommend it for:

  • Singles or couples cooking small portions.
  • Those with very small kitchens and limited counter space.
  • Budget-conscious buyers: the list price is high, even if often discounted.
