The return to school and university drives one of the year's most interesting deal periods. But not everything is worth buying at the same moment, and knowing what to grab now saves a fair bit.
On mid-range laptops, last year's models often drop in price right about now: for studying, writing and browsing they're more than enough, and the gap with the new model rarely justifies the spend. The same goes for tablets with a keyboard, great for notes.
On accessories — tech backpacks, headphones, hard drives and memory — bargains are frequent but should be checked against the real average, not the list price.
It's a different story if you're after a powerful laptop for gaming or creative work: there it often pays to wait for the year-end events, when the cuts are deeper. In short, haste is a poor adviser in September too.
